There have been times when I felt down, lost, or depressed. These feelings of despair made me feel helpless, disconnected, and worried. However, I learned that by simply turning my thought and attention to God’s love these dark thoughts were destroyed instantly.
Have you ever experienced a day when the clouds are so thick, that it feels like evening or close to dusk? I experienced that recently. But when the clouds broke and the light shined through the clouds, the darkness was gone in an instant.
The question is, was the light ever lessened? The answer is, no, of course not. The sun may seem really dim, but the light was constant—the source remained undimmed. But what about dark thoughts which suggest that we’re disconnected from God: can we get separated from God’s love—divine Love’s tender care and protection? No. Why? Because God’s love remains omni-present and God is infinite and fills all-space.
No matter how dark or loud, such thoughts are powerless. Why? Simply because a dark thought is no match to God’s omnipotence or all-power, just as a cloud could never overpower the sun. To our senses we may feel there is darkness (emotionally or physically), but by rising above the dark thoughts, as in a jet, you’d see the sun is shining just as brightly as ever —likewise, God is forever infinite. In that realization, you immediately feel the warmth, the joy, and the reassurance that the light of divine Love never dimmed.
So how do you rise above these clouds mentally to hear God’s love? First, through the power of prayer: as Christ Jesus taught us, it’s a divine source of power when we humbly and meekly listen for God’s still, small voice of calm. Second, gratitude: turning thought upward through gratitude turns on the light (the light we reflect from God) in thought that outshines heaviness and worry. Third, God’s Word: the Bible has all the answers, inspiration, and healing power —it is an eternal guide to Life.
Mary Baker Eddy gave us a key to this Biblical and divine power in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, when she wrote:
We walk in the footsteps of Truth and Love by following the example of our Master in the understanding of divine metaphysics. Christianity is the basis of true healing. Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power. (p.192)
The Master, Christ Jesus, faced down dark thoughts (see Matthew 4:1-11), as well as every fear, sin, sickness, and even death. We’re empowered by divine and Biblical authority to walk in Jesus’ footsteps, through every moment of darkness! We can because we know Jesus already proved darkness (evil, sin, and sickness) is unreal and powerless, while God’s tender loving care remains eternally omnipotent.
…thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
